Resident Evil 2 and why
I'm afraid of police stations
Written
by the fabulous Geoff Trainor
As you might be able to tell (maybe not for some
people) I am telling the horrific story of my
first time sitting down to a game of Resident
Evil 2.
My first time playing this game, I rented it from
my local Blockbuster (don't you just love that
place?). Now I had rented several games as I
usually do. So after going through several not so
good games (TR2), and finally at around 1 am, I
decided to play Resident Evil 2.
Well, I put the disc (Claire) into my PSX and
waited. All of a sudden this cut seen comes up.
Now just from watching this seen I was both
excited and and a little bit timid.
So I pick my game, and start out. I start off
right in the middle of about 7 zombies. Of course
I haven't played the previous REs so I had no
idea what the run button, or shoot buttons were.
It took me about 8 tries to actually get to
the weapons shop. Okay that part is cool, I
laugh a bit over the classic line, "don't
shoot I'm a human", and then go on to
search. After searching the happiness doesn't
last, for as I start to leave I hear a crash and
4-5 zombies are eating the gunman. That part made
me jump 5 feet in the air and it took me 10
minutes to get back down.
Not just that but when I finally reached the
ground, I started shooting all the zombies, and
then just left when they were all dead (stupid
thing to do).
After that I was pretty much ready for anything.
Or so I thought. Okay I finally get to the Police
Station. I go unlock the doors and I go to the
one on the left hand side. As I turn the corner
in the room, I see the window and all of a sudden
this things crawls along the window. Okay!!! This
is My first real point when I'm scared. When I
saw that I ran out of that room as fast as I
could go.
Finally get enough courage to go through that
door. I walk through notice the body, and the
dripping noise. I walk to the blood, and the
little cut scene plays, showing this thing, which
at first site to me looked like carnage from the
Spiderman comics. After that point in the game I
wouldn't enter a room without being really
nervous.
The next part in the game I found sort of scary
(enough to make me jump) was when I was returning
to the hall, and the hands pop out of the wall
and grab me. I near had to change my pants then.
Even now playing the game I am suspicious while
going through that hall. No matter how many times
I previously went through it.
Now after all this nothing much scared me enough
to make me jump ( 1st Scenario)but I
was still very nervous especially since I find
that creepy music seems louder at night.
As I mentioned I said that was all the scares for
the 1rst scenario, but as in the 2nd, I was
scared even more.
The first major time in the 1st scenario was when
I was walking through hall where the hands popped
out, and as I get closer to the windows zombies
jump out and come at me. That was probably one of
my biggest RE2 scare. But by far the biggest for
me was when, I was lighting the statuettes to get
the cog, and Mr. big old T-90 busts though the
all at me. No but that wasn't it. As I was going
back down the hall, he busts through again.
Well those were my scariest RE2 points, I hope I
didn't bore too many of you. If you are wondering
I did this in anticipation of Capcom's next
survival horror game being developed for the PSX.
It isn't part of the RE series but a game called
Dino Crises.

Who's
afraid of a big bad licker?

Okay.
I love getting scared. Period. The little rush of
fear is always exciting. All this news of neat
scary games like Dino Crisis and Silent Hill has
me all reminiscent about Resident Evil 2. let me
take you back to last year, January.
I
was attending a lock in (a slumber party at
school) and decided that I would buy Resident
Evil 2 and bring it there and play it. We pop in
Leon's CD, and sat there amazed by the beauty of
the fmv and giggling at the horrible translation
of the demo. ( My Math teacher laughed when
she saw the word instoppable) We ran through the
first part, getting constantly slaughtered. So we
turned it off and spent the next couple of hours
playing ball in the gym and didn't get upstairs
to play psx until about 1 am.
About
four of us decided to let some people sleep and
play somewhere else, so we boosted a t.v from the
av room and went upstairs to the biology
lab. We're back to playing Leon in a
dark room inside a quiet, large building, on a
late and seriously spooky, (wind howling) night.
After
successfully making it into the police station, I
got the controller and the walked into the
hallway after the room with the first magic box.
As I approached the dark puddle on the ground, I
felt a small chill run up my spine. My friend
screamed " Oh *#! @, What the *&% is
that? ". My first licker ever fell down to
the ground. I unloaded all 5-shotgun shells into
that licker keeping him from touching me.
Feeling
like the bad ass I was I continued on through the
game handling zombies and showing my skills. So
on my way to put the unicorn medallion into the
fountain, the hands came. It was so unexpected. I
couldn't see it coming. I was frightened. I drop
the controller, and shrieked. My was certainly
not the only. We ran out of that room terrified.
After getting that fright out of our system, we
barred the door shut and continued playing.
Unfortunately ( or fortunately for us) we didn't
get far enough in the game to reach the next
scary part.
As
soon as I got home I passed out and went to bed.
I awoke about 1 am in the night, hankering for
some PlayStation. I turned the system on, and
found resident evil 2 in it. Too lazy to change
it, I started my save game. I was know in the
lower part of the police station. I entered what
seem to be the Interrogation room criminals are
brought into in cop shows. I walked by the window
thinking to myself, boy wouldn't it be funny if
something pop out of that window? Boy was I
wrong. Truly f---ing wrong! I was scared silent.
I stood there and couldn't move. It took me
awhile to realize that this was a threat, and I
killed the licker before it could do the same to
me.
But
alas, was my final fright. the rest of the games,
( and very few parts of the 2nd scenario)
frighten me. But till this day I can't walk into
either room, even after the events happening
without getting scared. And for the next month, I
was in full Resident Evil mode in real life.
Before I opened the door to my house, I would ask
myself if I had full health and ammo, in case it
was full of lickers? Or I draw my hand out to be
ready to take out zombies. This lasted as long as
my FF7 mode. (I walked around carefully,
wondering why I have been attacked after walking
for nearly 10 minutes.) I cant wait to see
how much these new games mess me up. Now I must
hide under my blankie, good dreams. Mwahahaha!
