Delays, what the hell are they good for?

By: Geoff Trainor

Errr, I know this is a big subject, and I will try to be calm about writing this editorial but it is hard. All hardcore gamers know (and probably hate) about delays. Yes, we all know, and it always seems to happen to games that you are looking forward to the most.

Some games that I have been looking forward to are Tomorrow Never Dies, Lunar, Soul Reaver, and Persona 2 (which has been cancelled). All of these games have something, they all have been delayed.

Game developers have their reasons for delaying a game. Some say that they are just trying to make the game the best it can possibly be. Some others say they are redesigning major parts to make it better to us (the gamers), and some others say they get sidetracked by other games. But I personally think that these reasons are total crap, and are a front for 1 main reason. Now this is entirely my own opinion but, the developers of these much anticipated games are just trying to build up the anticipation. They want it so high that by the time the game is actually released, the gamers will be practically running to their local gaming stores, to but the game.

Well, I can't I blame them because I'd have to say it works; every time I go to buy a game, it is close to, or is sold out. Which leads to another thing. Stores always seem to be sold out for a long time, saying that they don't know when the next shipment will be, but that it won't be for a while. And the reason is the same, so people will be waiting in line to receive their copy.

Will this ever stop? Probably not, as long as it works that is. Maybe gamers like us could get involved and tell the big bad developers what we want. But I doubt that would do anything either. I guess we will just have to live with this downside to the Videogame world, and just keep on hoping that game we want will not be delayed that extra month.
